Ahead of the opening of registration, the organizers of Levi's GranFondo have announced that there will be 500 fewer places on the immensely popular Californian ride.

Registration for the October 1 event in Sonoma County begins at 10am PST on Monday, January 11, and the drop in capacity will make places on one of the 11 routes offered even harder to secure.

Thursday's announcement of the reduction highlighted that fewer riders means more road space and a better view for successful applicants.

Last year's ride was marred by the death of Edward Lund after he overshot a turn on the steep descent of Hauser Bridge Road. 54-year-old Lund from Sacramento was an artist, a highly regarded art installer and an experienced cyclist

In the wake of the tragedy, Carlos Perez, the head of Bike Monkey the company that produces the event, said that changes would occur and promised they would be well thought out and vetted.

Levi's GranFondo began in 2009 with the inaugural ride hosting 3,500 participants and is the brainchild of former professional cyclist Levi Leipheimer.

The ride has raised over $1.5m for charity.
