A cyclist taking part in the Levi's GranFondo died after crashing on a steep downhill section on Saturday.
The deceased was Edward Lund, 54, according to California Highway Patrol.
Despite emergency services reaching him quickly, Lund died of a head injury after overshooting a turn on Hauser Bridge Road said Sergeant Robert Boyer of the Highway Patrol.
Via Twitter, the organizers of the event expressed their distress at the news: "We are heartbroken to confirm that a participant of Levi's GranFondo died during the ride today in a bad solo crash."
According to a report in The Press Democrat newspaper, Lund was in the front group of riders on the Gran Route, the second longest distance offered at 102 miles. After the accident riders were escorted down the descent in question in groups by motorbikes.
There were around 6,000 participants in the 2015 edition of the event in Sonoma County, California.
Authorities said that in addition to the fatal incident there were sixteen 911 calls made for riders with six taken to hospital, one by helicopter.
