One of the best known gran fondos in North America, Levi’s GranFondo is both a challenging and competitive mass-start cycling event with riders of all ability levels from around the world. It began in 2009 with the inaugural event hosting 3,500 participants, and is the brainchild of professional cyclists Levi Leipheimer. Levi donates 100% of his time and involvement for the benefit of his community and the charities that benefit from the money generated by registration and fund-raising.
Open registration begins on Monday, January 11.
There are 11 routes from which to choose from a family-style 8.3 mile spin with 50% of it on a bike path to the mammoth 116-mile, 10,000-foot Panzer masterpiece that has no equal. Panzer participants must show that they have completed the Gran route in under 7.5 hours and places are limited to 400 (sold out).
The Medio, Gran, Gran Fort Ross and Panzer routes can all be taken with a side of gravel by choosing the Willow Creek option, which is slightly shorter and lower than the all-tarmac route, but adds something a little different.
Levi’s GranFondo is owned and governed by a 7-member 501(c)3 non-profit, VeloStreet Inc. and is produced by Bike Monkey.

Don’t think of the GranFondo’s finish line as an end to your day in the saddle. Think of it as the beginning of the best post-ride hoedown you’ve ever had the good fortune to flop your lycra-ed keister into. We’ve got an array of food vendors, beer taps, live music, and kid’s activities, but best of all, we’re going to provide multiple areas where you can (drum roll, please) sit down in the shade.
Blowing yourself out over three-to-ten hours on your bike really focuses one’s priorities. We’re taking that to heart and doubling up that most simple of pleasures: a place to take a load off just outside the beams of our sweet California sun.
We’re also aware that each of you riders have a support crew in tow and that a good portion of that crew is well below voting age. We’ll have a whole suite of kids activities, including climbing towers, arts and crafts, science events, petting zoos, as well as mother support services to keep the whole family happy while waiting for a lucky parent to cross the finish line.
Look for a schedule of bands and food vendors as we near the event. For now, take it on faith that we’ll have an all-day lineup of acts from every genre worth soaking your ears as well as food from down the street and around the world. We’ll include more parking information as well once October looms a bit closer.
